Modern Buildings for Climate Protection
Environmental protection on the job every day
skip: Environmental protection on the job every dayStationary facilities, such as transshipment terminals, logistical centers, office buildings, service workshops and hubs are also part of DB Schenker climate protection program. The main focus is on reducing CO2 emissions per square meter of space or substituting other sources of energy for fossil fuels.
These goals will be achieved through:
- Innovative lighting systems
- Thermal insulation in existing buildings
- Evaluation of solar energy systems or photovoltaic systems for new facilities to be built
- Use of geothermal energy systems
- Natural cooling systems (e.g., the night cooling system at the Willebroek warehouse)
- Use of rain water for sanitation and firefighting
Structural measures
A case in point numerous environmental considerations were included in the new construction of the airport office in Melbourne:
- Rainwater used in WCs
- Use of electrical forklifts reduces CO2 emissions
- Solar collector used to provide warm waterand power
- Rainwater used for watering and for fire extinguishingpurposes
- A sustainable waste management concept was developed to operate the building
Thoughtful employees
Making everyday operations more environmentally friendly requires that employees be persuaded as well as trained. This is why employees at DB Schenker will be regularly informed about the company’s climate protection measures through employee newspapers, newsletters, Intranet, notices and fliers.
In addition, guidelines for employees’ environmental training will be developed, which are the basis of employee training in nearly all of the DB Schenker national companies in Europe.
The best waste is the waste that is never made in the first place
In addition to this central idea, DB has resource management at its locations in Germany that organizes commercial exploitation of waste. A goal has been set, for example, that paper be used 100% and then be put back into circulation.
DB Schenker is already making its contribution. Wherever it is possible and depending on the wishes of its customers, SCHENKEReuropac uses an array of various reusable packaging materials.
In a large part of the DB Group, empty printer cartridges are returned to the manufacturer. On the one hand, this saves resources, as new cartridges do not need to be produced. On the other hand, it saves money, as refilled cartridges are less expensive.
