Advisor and Source of Inspiration
Environmental Competence Center
skip: Environmental Competence CenterThe cross transport-mode consulting unit is active for DB Schenker Rail as well as DB Schenker Logistics. The Green Consulting Competence Center is responsible for developing and monitoring Deutsche Bahn’s environmental objectives. DB Schenker actively supports this function in the development, implementation and marketing of climate measures. As a central “brain pool,” Green Consulting is the main driver behind the optimization of customer projects and the development of new products. The Competence Center is also responsible for assessing CO2 totals and recording the CO2 footprint.
Ecological consulting
Through Green Consulting, DB Schenker analyzes emissions in its customers’ transport chain and then structures these in accordance with environmental considerations.
According to the so-called “13th Annual Third-Party Logistics Study” (source?), DB Schenker is one of 8% of logistics companies that advises its clients on “green projects”: the experts at Green Consulting not only measure its own “CO2 footprint”, but also advise DB Schenker’s customers on all environmental issues, compile customer-related emissions calculations and generate ideas for tenders and specific customer inquiries.
Calculate CO2 emissions for the complete supply chain
DB Schenker has developed a comprehensive tool to calculate the CO2 emissions of the entire supply chain of its customers. The result, the so-called “CO2 footprint,” allows customers to gain an initial insight into the CO2 emissions from land transport, air and ocean freight, as well as from contract logistics. The CO2 footprint is also the basis for a future comprehensive ecological control and environmental management system that will enable the control and regulation of all relevant environmental parameters.
DB Schenker Logistics’ CO2 footprint
DB Schenker Logistics not only calculates the footprints of its customers, but it also record its own. Global CO2 emissions from land transport, air and ocean freight, as well as from contract logistics and all operating systems were recorded for the first time in March 2008 over a period of three months. An external assessor, the Berlin Ökoinstitut, calculated the footprint in accordance with ISO Standard 14064-1. This methodology was validated by Deloitte Certaccording DIN ISO 14064-3.
