Environment commitment in North Europe

Sustainable logistics already for more than 10 years

skip: Sustainable logistics already for more than 10 years
The Scandinavian countries Denmark, Finland and Norway were already working on environment-friendly logistics solutions at an early stage, and have won numerous rewards for their commitment.

Denmark

In 1998, Schenker A/S in Denmark already began to calculate its customers' carbon footprint and advise them with regard to a sustainable logistics chain. Schenker A/S has already won various prizes for this environment commitment, including prizes from the customers.

Finland

The national company supports and trains its drivers using an electronic system (on-board unit) that monitors driving behavior and measures various parameters, such as speed, fuel consumption, etc. This permits exact, permanent control to achieve efficient and environment-friendly driving behaviour. Successful drivers receive a monthly success bonus.

Norway

The national company Schenker AS in Norway has set itself the goal of reducing its specific carbon emissions by 50% until 2020 based on 2005 emissions. To this end, Schenker AS is employing numerous environment-friendly carbon-saving measures:

  • Tests with hybrid trucks and alternative fuels as from 2009/2010, depending on the production industry
  • Schenker AS in Norway was a pioneer at DB Schenker in terms of using biodiesel trucks. Today the national company operates a large number of trucks that run on biodiesel fuel made from rapeseed oil. Two variations are available: fuel with 30% or 100% biodiesel addition.
  • In cooperation with fuel supplier Statoil-Hydro, DB Schenker in Norway offers biodiesel supplies at strategically located fuel stations. This biodiesel consists of 30% biodiesel and 70% conventional diesel fuel. At the moment, corresponding activities have started among others in Oslo (StatoilHydro/Hydro Texaco), Drammen (Hydro Texaco), Kristiansand (Hydro Texaco), Stavanger (StatoilHydro), and Åndalsnes (StatoilHydro) with more to follow: soon there will be a total of 20 such fuel stations operating.
  • Beyond this, the DB Schenker national company in Norway has now obtained an undertaking from its sub-contractors to add two hybrid vehicles to their fleets as of 2009.
  • In 2008, around 400 drivers attended courses on fuel-efficient driving; more than 700 drivers will be trained accordingly in 2009/2010.
  • Reduction of truck cruising speeds
  • Expansion of rail freight transport from Oslo (central hub). Currently around 70% of Schenker AS's annual ton-kilometers are handled by rail, serving among others the following destinations: Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim and Bodø including Narvic, which is served by the Artic Rail Express (ARE) via Sweden.
  •  Expansion of intermodal solutions in long haul services
