Protecting the environment on inland waterways and by rail
skip: Protecting the environment on inland waterways and by railIn 2007, Schenker S.A. in France moved around 15% of all truck transports to the rail or inland waterways. Inland waterway transport is a frequently used mode of transport, particularly for seaport hinterland services. In concrete terms, this means that in 2007 about 9,000 TEU were transported by inland waterway:
- between Le Havre, Rouen and Paris on the Seine
- between Anvers/Rotterdam, Strasbourg and Mulhouse on the Rhine
- between Fos sur Mer and Lyon on the Rhône
- between Lille, Anvers and Rotterdam on the L’Escault
Cross-functional Environment Working Group
Schenker S.A. has also set up an Environment Working Group consisting of employees from the areas land, air and ocean freight as well as Purchasing and Tender Management. The working group collects internal and external information on sustainability, evaluates it and derives corresponding measures. Training sessions are held to raise employees' awareness for sustainable behavior.
