Europe’s largest rail freight operator

skip: Europe’s largest rail freight operator
Thanks to its own strong companies and numerous cooperations and joint ventures with partner railways, DB Schenker Rail offers rail freight services throughout almost the whole of Europe.

DB Schenker Rail is the only rail freight operator in Europe with a truly European presence. It is supported by its own European production network, which it has expanded consistently over the years. Around 32,600 employees work to ensure that cross-border transportation is managed efficiently and in a customer-oriented and environmentally friendly manner. Today almost 60 percent of DB Schenker Rail’s transport services are pan-European. With 108,840 freight cars and 3,437 locomotives, DB Schenker Rail has the largest fleet on the continent.

DB Schenker Rail comprises the three regions East, Germany/Central and West. Central functions such as Production, Sales, Finance and Human Resources provide support to the regions. Subsidiaries, which operate as fully responsible rail companies or solely as production companies depending on market requirements, are responsible for regional business activities. In addition, internationally specialized sales, forwarding and logistics companies operate on national markets as well as internationally.

Region East comprises DB Schenker Rail Polska (Poland), Logistic Service Danubius (Romania) and DB Schenker Rail Bulgaria. Region Germany/Central consists of the production companies DB Schenker Rail Deutschland AG, DB Schenker Rail Nederland, DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia, Nordcargo in Italy, DB Schenker Rail Schweiz, RBH Logistics, Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn and Zehlendorfer Eisenbahn- und Hafen. The largest and highest capacity region also includes companies focused on special markets such as DB Schenker Rail Automotive, DB Schenker BTT, DB Schenker Nieten and DB Intermodal Services. Region West comprises DB Schenker Rail UK, Euro Cargo Rail France (ECR) and Transfesa/ECR Spain.

A strong sales function at the European level provides customers cross-regional support, complementing sales in the regions. Offer planning in production and asset management at a European level are designed to further network European products and services. A network management system is being developed for international and intercontinental transports to Russia and China, for example. The central functions also include finance, human resources and IT.

One special product offered is the Europe-wide Railport network, which is designed for customers without their own private siding. DB Schenker Rail provides universal, multi-function logistics centers with highly efficient sidings.
