Alexander Hedderich was born in Wetzlar, Germany on October 14, 1965. Between 1985 and 1991 he attended Justus Liebig University in Giessen, where he studied economics and subsequently graduated with a degree in economic science. Following his graduation, Hedderich was employed as a research associate for the Chair of Economics, Professor Gerd Aberle, until 1996, when he earned his doctorate (Dr. rer. pol.).
Alexander Hedderich joined a business consultancy in Düsseldorf, WIBERA Wirtschaftsberatung AG, in 1996, where he headed the Railway Transport section until 1998.
In 1999 Alexander Hedderich began working for Deutsche Bahn in different functions. He was Head of Corporate Development at Deutsche Bahn from 2004 until 2009.
